CASE STUDY

Ashcroft: A Cottage Garden, Ringmer, East Sussex

The owners of this beautiful Victorian house in Ringmer, East Sussex, were looking for a cottage garden design, in keeping with the style of the building.

THE BRIEF

This large, somewhat neglected site needed structure and form; a space to sit and enjoy the sunshine with plants and materials sympathetic to the building and surrounding area.  The cottage garden has a formal design but remains soft and homely through the use of reclaimed bricks and natural stone paving, and a sympathetic planting scheme including heritage roses and lavenders.

THE RESULT

From the back door, we laid the courtyard using Victorian pavers and built several new walls using reclaimed Victorian stock bricks.  A beautiful secluded area to the back of the property was a perfect space to design and build a traditional Victorian sunken garden.

A large selection of heritage English roses, lavenders and evergreens provide a haven for bees as well as human noses! And this pretty scheme complements the natural stone and brickwork perfectly.

What the client said

“Matt gave a clear quotation at the outset, indicating exactly what was and was not included. They were courteous and friendly throughout, and finished the work in good time, to a very high standard – in fact my neighbour’s already keen to book them!.”
